How to Set Up a Guest Wi-Fi Network

Letting customers, visitors, or contractors onto the same Wi-Fi network your business runs on is a security and performance risk. Guest Wi-Fi solves both problems by giving outside users their own separate network with internet access but no visibility into your business systems. On modern small-business routers, setting one up takes 10 minutes. Here’s how to do it right, plus what settings actually matter.
Why guest Wi-Fi matters
A single flat Wi-Fi network — where employees, printers, servers, and visitors all connect to the same SSID — has two problems:
Security. Any device on your business Wi-Fi can potentially see and try to reach every other device on it. A guest’s compromised laptop can attempt to reach your file server, printer, or point-of-sale system. Modern operating systems have some built-in isolation, but relying on the guest’s laptop to be well-configured is a bad plan.
Performance. Business bandwidth shared with unmetered guest use means video streams, cloud backups, and Zoom calls compete with a guest binge-watching Netflix in the lobby. Even with plenty of headroom, this is annoying.
Guest Wi-Fi solves both by giving outside devices their own SSID (network name), their own IP range, and no route to your internal network.
What good guest Wi-Fi looks like
- Separate SSID. Your business Wi-Fi is named “AcmeCorp”; guest Wi-Fi is named “AcmeCorp Guest.” Different networks, different passwords.
- Network isolation. Devices on the guest network cannot see or reach devices on the business network. This is the key security feature.
- Bandwidth cap (optional). Limit total guest bandwidth to a percentage of your total, so guests can’t drown your business traffic.
- Reasonable password (or captive portal). A rotating simple password on a sign at the front desk is fine for most small offices. Corporate environments often add a captive portal that requires accepting terms first.
- No access to business printers or files. Follows from network isolation.
- Client isolation. Devices on the guest network can’t see each other either — protects visitors from each other.
Setting up guest Wi-Fi on common routers
Business-grade routers (Ubiquiti, Meraki, TP-Link Omada)
Business routers have guest network features built in and work almost identically. On Ubiquiti UniFi:
- In UniFi controller, go to Settings → Networks → Create New Network.
- Choose “Guest Network” as the type. UniFi automatically applies network isolation, client isolation, and appropriate DHCP settings.
- Set the SSID name and password.
- Optionally add bandwidth limits and a captive portal with a welcome message.
- Assign it to your access points and save.
On TP-Link Omada: nearly identical flow through the Omada Controller. On Cisco Meraki: SSID configuration in the Dashboard with a “Guest” flag that pre-configures the security settings.
Consumer routers with guest network features
Most modern consumer routers (Asus, Netgear, Linksys, TP-Link Archer, Google Nest) include a Guest Network toggle in their app or admin panel:
- Log into the router’s admin page (via the manufacturer’s app or a browser at 192.168.1.1 or similar).
- Find “Guest Network” or “Guest Wi-Fi” (usually under Wireless settings or a dedicated section).
- Enable it. Set an SSID name and password. Most routers apply reasonable defaults for isolation.
- Optionally set a bandwidth cap or session time limit.

ISP-provided router/modem combos
Comcast, Verizon, and other ISPs’ rental routers often have guest network features, though the settings are typically in the ISP’s mobile app rather than a traditional web interface. Look for “Xfinity Wi-Fi Hotspot” (Comcast), “Fios TV network” or guest options on the My Fios app (Verizon), etc.
Settings to actually configure
- SSID name. Make it obvious and welcoming — “AcmeCorp Guest” or “AcmeCorp Visitors.” Avoid tech jargon that guests won’t recognize.
- Password. Simple but not trivial. Rotate quarterly (or after any incident). Post it visibly in the guest area.
- Isolation. Enable “AP isolation” or “Client isolation” or similar. This blocks guests from seeing each other’s devices.
- Access to LAN: disabled. The whole point.
- Bandwidth cap. Cap at 30-50% of your total to keep business traffic priority.
- DHCP range. Guest network should use a different subnet than your business — e.g., business on 192.168.1.x, guests on 192.168.20.x.
Common mistakes
- Leaving guest Wi-Fi open with no password. Even a shared password limits abuse. Open networks get scraped for automated bandwidth abuse.
- Sharing the business password “just this once.” The visitor keeps that password, connects on their next visit, tells someone else. Now three people have your business Wi-Fi password. Rotate the business password and stop doing this.
- Skipping isolation because setup was more complicated. Isolation is the point. If you’re just making a second SSID with no isolation, you didn’t accomplish anything.
- Trusting IoT devices to the business network. Smart TVs, thermostats, and coffee makers with Wi-Fi should be on the guest network (or better, a dedicated IoT network on business gear). They’re notoriously bad about firmware updates and are common entry points for network attacks.
IoT devices: give them their own network too
Smart TVs, thermostats, security cameras, printers, and other Wi-Fi-enabled office equipment are a security weak point — they rarely get firmware updates, and manufacturers often ship them with poor security defaults. Business-grade routers let you create a third SSID dedicated to IoT devices, isolated from both your business network and your guest network. If your router supports it, use it: business Wi-Fi for computers and staff phones, guest Wi-Fi for visitors, and IoT Wi-Fi for smart devices. Each network can reach the internet but not the others. This is one of the most impactful network security moves a small business can make, and modern business gear from Ubiquiti, TP-Link Omada, and Meraki supports it out of the box.

Setting up guest Wi-Fi is one of the highest-value, lowest-effort security upgrades a small business can do. Ten minutes with your router’s guest network feature, and outside devices can no longer reach your business systems. Use business-grade equipment if you have more than 20 concurrent guests or if reliability matters; consumer routers are adequate for a typical small office.
